What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are a type of dental prosthesis that combines traditional dentures with dental implants for enhanced stability and functionality. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely on adhesives or suction, implant-supported dentures are anchored securely to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone. This provides better stability, preventing slipping or shifting while speaking or eating. The implants also promote jawbone health by preventing bone loss that often occurs with missing teeth. This innovative solution offers improved comfort, durability, and confidence for individuals seeking a more secure and natural-feeling alternative to conventional dentures.

Who Is a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Candidates for implant-supported dentures typically include individuals with missing teeth or those struggling with traditional dentures’ instability. Good candidates generally have sufficient jawbone density to support dental implants, or they may undergo bone grafting to enhance bone structure. Suitable candidates also need good overall health, as certain medical conditions can affect the success of the implant integration process. Adequate oral hygiene practices and commitment to follow-up care are crucial. A consultation with a dentist or oral surgeon helps assess individual suitability, ensuring the best outcomes for those seeking a more secure and permanent solution for their denture needs.

What Are My Denture Treatment Options?

At Harmony Dental Care, we proudly offer dentures to fit all budgets and health needs, including traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures, and All-on-4® implant restorations..

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable and rest on a plastic base that is carefully crafted to blend with your gums. Denture adhesive will help to keep your restorations in place while in use. Should you require only a partial denture, our dental lab will match the natural color of your teeth. If you need a full denture, Dr. Abide will make sure that it complements the shape and proportions of your face. With a full denture, it is also possible to elect how white you would like it to appear.

Implant-Supported Dentures

If you opt for implant-retained dentures, Dr. Abide will oversee the entire process to make sure that you receive a stable and lifelike restoration. For your convenience, a local oral surgeon will perform your implant placement here in the office. During the procedure, a predetermined number of dental implants will be placed—usually between 4 and 8 per arch—and your oral surgeon will angle them slightly to minimize the impact to your jawbone. This will create a very stable base for your new restoration. Once the implants are placed, we can usually provide a temporary denture to wear while you recover.

After you have healed, Dr. Abide will attach your permanent restoration. Your implant-retained denture will be virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth, both in function and appearance.

All-on-4® or All-on-6

All-on-4® and All-on-6 refer to specific techniques for placing implant dentures using between four and six implants per arch. With advances in dental technology, your dentist can now take high-quality scans of your teeth and jaw to determine the optimal placement locations and angles for the implants, minimizing the number needed to anchor a denture.

Which Type of Dentures Are Right for You?

The type of denture that is right for you will depend on a number of factors. We can discuss your goals during an initial consultation and make an appropriate recommendation.

Both traditional and implant-supported dentures can restore your self-confidence and your ability to eat and speak freely. However, implant-retained dentures are the most lifelike and stable option. They can also prevent jawbone degeneration, a natural consequence of tooth loss. In order to qualify for dental implants, you must have sufficient jawbone volume to support the titanium posts. If you have suffered significant jawbone degeneration, traditional dentures may be a better option.

If you currently wear traditional dentures, Dr. Abide can convert your prosthetic into an implant-supported restoration. Many patients who currently wear traditional dentures opt for this treatment option.

What Can I Expect From the Implant Denture Treatment Process?

The implant-supported denture treatment process involves several key steps. First, a thorough examination assesses the patient’s oral health, jawbone density, and suitability for implants. If necessary, preparatory procedures like tooth extraction or bone grafting may be performed. Next, the dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone based on the plan created by your dentist. Typically, implants take a few months to heal and fuse with the jawbone, during which time a temporary overdenture can be worn. During this time, your custom dentures are crafted based on the size, shape, and color decisions you made with your dentist during the consultation process. The final step involves securely attaching the dentures to the implants, providing a stable, natural-feeling solution for individuals with missing teeth.

How Much Do Implant-Supported Dentures Cost?

According to Forbes, the average cost of All-on-4® in 2024 ranges between $24,000-50,000. That said, this price can vary based on a number of factors, including the techniques used, the materials your denture prosthetic is made from, whether any preparatory procedures are necessary, and whether your procedure is eligible for insurance benefits. During your consultation with Dr. Abide, he can create a custom treatment plan based on your unique needs. At that point, our team can provide a personalized price quote.

What Are the Benefits of Dentures?

Whether you choose a traditional or implant-supported restoration, you will enjoy a number of significant benefits. If missing or damaged teeth are impairing your ability to eat, you will be able to enjoy a wider range of foods. This is especially true with implant-retained dentures, as they will not slip out of place, even when you are eating hard or chewy foods. Dentures can also reduce pressure on your jaw joints. Damaged or missing teeth can put uneven pressure along your dental arch, and this may cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and facial pain. Finally, your restorations will improve your appearance and self-confidence. Not only will you enjoy a renewed smile, dentures will fill out your lips and cheeks, giving you a youthful, rejuvenated look.
